Creating opportunities for communities of color to engage business and civic leaders in actionable solutions for race equity issues: that is the crux of the work of the Oregon League of Minority Voters (OLMV). Led by Promise King, a former Portland Tribune columnist and City Hall staffer, OLMV works with elected officials, government and business leaders to grapple with important issues of civil rights and access to opportunities among communities of color.
Every year, OLMV honors community and civic leaders who have contributed their talents, time and resources toward providing and enhancing opportunities for people who have historically dealt with barriers to accessing quality educational opportunities, sustainable family wage jobs, and desirable neighborhoods that offer access to amenities. This year's honorees included Nike founder and philanthropist Phil Knight and Tom Kelly, president of Neil Kelly Co. Visit the OLMV page on FaceBook for more photos.
The evening's special guest was Dr. Rudy Crew, whose appointment as Oregon's first Chief Education Officer, was announced earlier that day. Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber introduced Dr. Crew to the OLMV crowd. Here's a capture of Dr. Crew's speech.
