It's always heartening and encouraging to note advocacy work and action that Fil-Am networks across the United States are championing, in the spirit of raising awareness about continuing struggles of our kababayans in the homeland.
Since 2010, the all-volunteer coalition known as the Portland Committee on Human Rights in the Philippines (PortlandCHRP) has involved Fil-Ams and others allies in advancing the national democratic movement in the Philippines and in the United States through education, leadership development and political action.
PortlandCHRP serves as an outlet for local, national, and international action alerts, media updates, and general information related to human rights violations against Filipinos in the Philippines and U.S. Organizers lead political education discussions, films, guest speakers, panels, and vigils in response to bring attention to the lived experiences and working conditions of Filipinos in Portland, the U.S. and in the Philippines.
On the heels of the fourth round of peace talks between the Philippine government and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP), a civil war killing thousands persists without justice for the masses. Next week -- on May 1 and 2 -- PortlandCHRP is hosting a series of events as part of the "JustPeacePH Tour 2017: Promoting Peace and Justice in the Philippines," which includes international peace advocates from the Philippines. This nationwide Peace Tour addresses the root causes of the civil war in the Philippines. PortlandCHRP organizers are hosting three human rights defenders from different communities at the front lines of the struggle.
Everyone is welcome to join PortlandCHRP and Peace Tour delegates at any these events to learn more about the peaces talks and current human rights conditions in the Philippines.
