Every year in March, area high schools crown their Rose Festival Princesses: young women who exemplify the brilliance and dynamism of the City of Roses through their scholastic achievements and dedication to community.
One of the Portland's most iconic institutions, the Rose Festival Court provides enviable opportunities for young women to gain unparalleled experiences in community outreach and engagement. Each Rose Princess is paired with a seasoned woman leader who serves as her mentor. The Rose Festival Court travels full-time – five days a week for five weeks – visiting community events, business leaders, hospitals, senior living centers, youth organizations and civic groups. Princesses also receive scholarship awards toward their college education.
I am honored for the chance to get to know several of these exemplary young women through writing their profiles for The Asian Reporter. This year, seven of the 15 Rose Princesses have an Asian Pacific Islander background. Here are their stories:
Maggie Beutler, Wilson High School
Michaela Canete, Metro West (Hillsboro High School)
Mele Kavapalu, Madison High School
Madisyn Montgomery, Metro East (Oregon City High School)
Keely Nguyen, Franklin High School
Tiffany Nguyen, David Douglas High School
Lucy Sagoo, St. Mary's Academy
