An Illustrated Guide to the Zen Tea Ceremony

Soryo Matsumura has produced a richly illustrated volume that approaches Japanese culture and history through both the materiality and spirituality of one of its most venerable rituals. With careful attention to detail, Matsumura walks readers through the full arc of the tea ceremony, centered on harmony and connectedness. He describes both the painstaking preparation a host undertakes and the inner readiness guests are expected to cultivate before arriving at a gathering.

"An Illustrated Guide to the Zen Tea Ceremony" covers the utensils, dress code, and even the precise physical forms that give the ceremony its quality of embodied mindfulness. The full-color photographs and illustrations elevate the text considerably, making this a visually beautiful rendering of “the way of tea.”

As an introduction to the ceremony, the book offers enough context on etiquette and convention to help a newcomer feel oriented and at ease, whether they are attending a ceremony for the first time or simply hoping to understand what they are witnessing.

Where the book falls short, however, is in the depth of its spiritual inquiry. Matsumura does not adequately trace the ceremony’s roots in Zen monastic practice or explore how Zen lineages continue to shape the ritual today. Readers seeking a serious examination of the philosophical and contemplative dimensions of “cha dao” will need to look elsewhere.

A Beginner’s Guide to the Roots of Yoga

The modern practice of yoga in Western culture is often criticized for disconnecting from its cultural, historical, and spiritual roots. In many studios and gyms, yoga is reduced to a fitness routine—focused on stretching rather than its original purpose of enlightening the mind. In "A Beginner’s Guide to the Roots of Yoga," celebrated practitioner Nikita Desai reconnects readers with yoga’s ancient Indian origins. Drawing on her Indian heritage, Desai explores the deeper meanings behind yoga’s forms, postures, and intentions, offering a rich historical and philosophical context for those seeking a more authentic practice. Desai shares her personal journey of reclaiming yoga’s essence, inviting readers to do the same by integrating cultural awareness into their practice. Her tone is welcoming and nonjudgmental, making the book accessible to readers of all backgrounds. Although I do not practice yoga, my meditation roots lie in Zen Buddhism. Through conversations with prac...
