This morning, I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the annual MLK Day event hosted by The Skanner newsgroup, the most prominent African-American newspaper serving Portland and Seattle.
The keynote was delivered by the Rev. Benjamin Chavis, CEO and President of the National Newspaper Publishers Association. He spoke about the importance of continuing to push for change and building momentum in addressing the most pressing civil rights issues of our time: healthcare access, education reform, and economic justice.
The annual Drum Major for Justice award was conferred to the Albina Ministerial Alliance Coalition for Peace and Justice Reform, represented at the event by Dr. Leroy Haines. The Albina Ministerial Alliance Coalition has been at the forefront of demanding equity in the justice system for communities of color that are disproportionately impacted by law enforcement arrests and other actions.
